Scrap Business Rates for Pharmacies
Whilst the Government's announcement about pubs and music venues getting discount on business rates will be welcomed by many high street businesses, it does nothing for pharmacies, which once again have been left behind.
“It remains absurd that community pharmacies are expected to pay full business rates, while other parts of the NHS, such as GP surgeries and dental practices, receive relief for the NHS services they provide.
“The Government may believe that supporting pubs is more politically attractive than supporting pharmacies, but if pharmacies continue to close at the current rate, patients will lose vital access to healthcare on their doorstep and voters will rightly hold Ministers to account."

Wegovey Pill Launch
We discussed the launch of the Wegovy pill, its effect and popularity with
Channel 5 News and the LBC radio.
The Telegraph did a big story on this as well prior to the launch and as a key representative of community pharmacies we were asked to comment extensively on the topic.
The message is clear—weight loss is a journey. It involves lifestyle changes, exercise, healthy eating and ditching some bad habits. Community pharmacies are very well placed to take patients on that journey and ensure safe supply of weight loss medicines

Meningitis B Vaccination Roll Out
During the Kent meningitis outbreak earlier this year, we campaigned for the Men B vaccine to be available to young adults and teenagers via a national vaccination programme through community pharmacies.
We even debated this on Good Morning Britain in March asking for the vaccination to be rolled out.
We are pleased that following our campaign NHS has now decided to offer this service to young adults - it’s a step in the right direction but we need to ensure proper planning, and support to pharmacies during this short timescale

Weight loss Medicines
We discussed the popularity of weight loss jabs with The Sun
and the Daily Mail
Weight-loss jabs are in a class of their own and their effectiveness and life-changing impact for patients has led to unprecedented demand. Pharmacies have never seen anything like it.
Yet despite this ballooning bill, only one per cent of those eligible for weight-loss jabs can get them on the NHS.
Brick and mortar pharmacies offer a safe root for weight loss management with GLP-1s. Weight loss is a journey that involves lifestyle alterations and community pharmacies are ideally placed to support patients on that journey.

Medicines Shortages
We worked closely with the BBC team over a few weeks to bring to light the complexity of the supply chain and the medicines reimbursement mechanism, to show the difficulty that pharmacy operators go through daily, often being out of pocket trying to obtain medicines, and the impact on patient care.
It was good to see BBC publishing this and as a pharmacy organisation IPA having the first quote in the story. BBC Radio 4 Today’s Programme also covered my statement when reporting on the story. We also discussed this in several other national media outlets.

No business should be forced into being out of pocket when delivering a service to the public.
As part of our campaign we will continue raising awareness about how the dysfunctional pharmacy funding and reimbursement mechanism are affecting community pharmacies and medicines supply chain.

Medicines Supply Challenges
In her interview with Jeremy Vine on BBC, Dr Leyla Hannbeck highlighted the urgent need for community pharmacies to be adequately funded by the Government to be able to provide pharmaceutical services and supply of medicines for patients during these very turbulent times, made worse by the war in the Middle East and the closure of Strait of Hormuz.
Community pharmacies across the country are reporting the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on their daily activities.
Costs are rising significantly and we are going to see terrible consequences for patient care as pharmacies are struggling to survive and medicines supply is affected.
The Government must act urgently and bridge the community pharmacy funding gap.

IPA highlighted the need for investment in our sector on the front page of
the Daily Express. This was the first time community pharmacies got front page coverage. It was also covered on Sky News Press Review.
Hundreds of pharmacies closed for good in 2025.
At the same time, pharmacies are grappling with:

• Increased National Insurance contributions
• Ongoing uncertainty around the new pharmacy funding settlement.
Without urgent and meaningful intervention, we are heading towards the creation of “pharmacy deserts”.

Dr Leyla Hannbeck spoke with numerous media outlets including

She highlighted that whilst vaccine stock is depleting in some areas due to high demand, most pharmacies have sufficient stock.
She also called for the NHS authorities to be better prepared and raise sufficient awareness about the start of the flu vaccination season.

Community pharmacies are ready for a bigger role in vaccination services
We launched our Shot in the Arm campaign in Parliament
We launched our Shot in the Arm campaign in Parliament on October 2025 calling for vaccination to become the domain of community pharmacies, we talked about the value of our sector for UK healthcare and provided robust data on the savings that the Government would make and how patient care would gain if pharmacies were invested in.
We also asked that pharmacies get similar reimbursement fee for flu vaccine as GPs.
We were pleased that the government took this onboard and increased the vaccination fee for community pharmacies.

She said: “This shows the extent of the crisis in the sector, which is only going to get worse. The Government, NHS are asking pharmacies to do more and more, the public is rightly turning to us for guidance because of the difficulties of getting advice elsewhere - yet pharmacies are closing.
“Why? Because without proper funding they are unable to cope. Due to years of underfunding many pharmacies cannot afford paying their bills.”
Dr Hannbeck said pharmacists were willing to support other parts of the ailing NHS. But she added: “Our NHS pharmacies are fast disappearing. Ministers and the NHS must stop taking us for granted.”

Severe shortage of bedbug bite treatment hits UK as pest expert warns ‘they’re ALREADY in your house’
Dr Leyla Hannbeck, of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, said supplies are "very patchy" up and down the country.
"We're not sure how many pharmacies have the cream in stock right now," she added.
There are several effective alternatives to hydrocortisone cream which you find in a local pharmacy, Leyla explained.
She said: "Calamine lotion or antihistamines can be used to reduce the itchiness.
"You can also hold a cold compress to the bitten area to bring down swelling.
"Try not to scratch or itch your bite as it can get infected and leave scars."
She added: "If the bites are painful then speak to your pharmacist or GP. They could be infected and require stronger cortisone medication or antibiotics."

Dr Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, said stores should be allowed to publish CCTV images of thieves stealing without breaking the law “in light of police inaction”.
“The police are not doing anything about it and we are left to just put up with it.”
Dr Hannbeck said the data watchdog should issue clearer guidance on the rules around releasing images of suspected shoplifters.
She said many pharmacies were increasingly facing violent and abusive shoplifters, as the incidents were not seen as a priority crime.

The problem is so acute that some patients have been forced to fork out hundreds of pounds with private clinics while, alarmingly, others are attempting to make the drug at home, Dr Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, told i.
“It wouldn’t surprise me all if, with this announcement, there’s going to be even more problems for the manufacturer to meet the ever increasing demand for this product,” Dr Hannbeck said.
“Front line pharmacists are having to run from pillar to post to try and chase prescriptions – we are having real difficulties obtaining supplies for our diabetic patients, it’s crazy.

Major Changes top the Covid and Flu Vaccine Programme

Dr Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive of the Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies, told MailOnline that the decision to push the roll-out back carried a 'big risk' of wastage.
Pre-ordered stock, which must be booked months in advance of the flu jab rollout, may not be used up in the time available because it could expire, insiders fear.
Dr Hannbeck said: 'All of this is very last minute.'
It is unclear why the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and NHS England wait until the last minute to announce their decisions.
'They never involve us and we are left to deal with last minute planning.
'If they've discovered that it's better to co administer the flu and Covid vaccines at the same time, then they should communicate that earlier, not at the last hour.
'This is total disrespect to the already overstretched healthcare professionals who need time to plan.'

‘Matter of life and death’: Diabetics hit by Ozempic shortage as demand surges for weight-loss jabs - iNews
Leyla Hannbeck, chief executive at the AIMp, described the current situation regarding Ozempic supply as a “complete mess”.
She told i: “There have been a lot of issues with shortages of Ozempic. The sole manufacturer has been struggling to meet the demand. It’s causing a lot of hassle at the moment. The drug is popular and well known.
“A lot of people with diabetes are finding it very difficult. In some areas, I’ve heard that the local integrated care boards are switching away from the drug. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done as lot of other medications are in short supply too.
“It’s a complete mess at the moment. We don’t know when supplies will be stable again. There’s been a lot of adverting around semiglutide and its benefits, often with celebrities involved. The demand has meant the supply can’t keep up.”
She added: “I anticipate the situation getting worse if the demand keeps high – the fact remains that semaglutide is in high demand across many countries for weight loss and that impacts on the supply for patients with diabetes.”

"This has led to many pharmacies severely struggling with cashflow problems" she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme, adding that because most of their work is NHS-funded, the pharmacies cannot pass on rising costs to customers.

The Association of Independent Multiple Pharmacies (AIMP), which represents more than 3,000 pharmacies, says no patients should be denied prescription medicines because they cannot afford them.
