Pharmacies in Crisis
Despite growing demand for their services, our pharmacies are facing several challenges which are leading to accelerating closure rates:
A funding shortfall of over £1.2 billion: In July 2019, a 5-year funding deal for community pharmacies was agreed upon and set out in the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework (CPCF). It provides NHS pharmacy services in England with £2.59 billion of funding annually but does not take inflation into account. This has led to real-term funding cuts year-on-year leading to a funding gap for the pharmacy sector.
An outdated reimbursement mechanism: Increased medication costs have led to pharmacists being out of pocket when providing certain medications, as they have to buy above the cost of what the NHS will reimburse them.
Medicine shortages: 111 different medicines are routinely in short supply, double the number in 2022. This leaves pharmacy teams spending hours every day trying to source medication to fulfil prescriptions, and often pharmacists have to refer patients back to GPs to discuss alternative treatments.
Pharmacists are being pushed over the edge, ending up in debt and turning to friends and family just to keep their doors open.
What can be done?
The Fight4Pharmacies campaign is calling on the Government to:
Close the funding shortfall: Recent research has found that £1 invested into primary care, saves the NHS £2 in secondary care. Investing in pharmacies will save the NHS money in the long run. It is critical that the Government addresses the £1.2 billion shortfall in funding, and provides sustainable funding to the pharmacy sector.
Create a new community pharmacy contact: The current community pharmacy contract is not fit for purpose. It is time for the Government to work with us to create a new contract which ensures that the sector can continue providing primary healthcare services to their local communities.
